Washington: Following a flurry of policy changes on Twitter in recent days, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has launched a poll on the microblogging service, asking millions of users “should I step down as Twitter CEO?”

“As the adage goes, be careful what you wish for, because you might get it,” he warned in a third tweet.
This survey comes after Twitter declared on Sunday that accounts used to promote other accounts on other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Mastodon, would be banned.
“We understand that many of our consumers use other social media platforms. We will, however, no longer allow free promotion of certain social media networks on Twitter “Twitter Help tweeted.
“In particular, we will deactivate accounts created simply for the purpose of promoting other social networks, as well as content that contains links or usernames for the following platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post,” the company said.
Furthermore, Twitter stated that cross-posting content from any social media platform is still permitted. “Posting links or usernames to social media platforms other than those specified above does not violate this policy.”
The Twitter rule change comes at a time when Elon Musk has been chastised for major policy changes on the network.
On Friday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep concern” about Elon Musk’s banning of journalists from Twitter, calling it a dangerous precedent.
“We are really worried by the arbitrary suspension of journalist accounts on Twitter,” Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a press conference.
He stated that media voices should not be stifled on a platform that claims to be a safe haven for free speech. According to the UN spokesperson, this action sets a dangerous precedent at a time when journalists around the world face censorship, physical threats, and worse.
On Thursday, Elon Musk’s Twitter terminated many journalists’ accounts, with the site displaying “account suspended” warnings for them. The accounts were reinstated following a public outcry.
