Windows Server 2012 no longer receive support
  • The life of Windows Server 2012 is almost up.
  • Users are advised by Microsoft to upgrade to supported versions.
  • Keep in mind that you have till the year’s end to complete it.

Even if we’ve been using different versions of Microsoft windows created software for a while and don’t feel like giving them up, all good things must come to an end.

But in order to create new, better software, the industry titan must retire certain outdated versions.

The tale of Windows Server 2012 is similar, since this operating system is reportedly the next to be decommissioned by the Redmond-based software firm.

But don’t worry, you still have almost till the end of the year, so make sure you finish what you need to do and upgrade to a more recent version that is still supported.

Get ready for the end of support for Windows Server 2012

Microsoft switched its attention to Windows Server 2012 after the release of Windows 10 version 22H2 and the end of support for the beloved Windows 8.1.

Customers have been informed by the firm that Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 extended support will cease on October 10 in all editions.

Keep in mind that, in October 2018, Windows Server 2012 marked the end of its mainstream support period.

To allow consumers to upgrade to newer, less-supported Windows Server versions, Microsoft postponed the end of extended support by five years.

Naturally, Microsoft will stop offering technical assistance and bug patches for newly identified problems that can affect the reliability or usability of servers running the two OS versions once the end of extended support is reached.

Please take note that this is the third warning that this Windows version will be retired later this year, the first two having been delivered in July 2021.

The Redmond-based tech giant encourages administrators to upgrade to Windows Server 2022 or buy Extended Security Updates if they want to keep their on-premises Windows Server 2012 systems operational and getting bug patches and security updates.

As you probably already know, until October 13, 2026, ESUs will give them access to security upgrades for up to another three years.

Their databases and applications might alternatively be moved to Azure Virtual Machines, which will give them free ESUs for three years after support ends.

Customers can utilize Azure Arc to obtain automated/scheduled ESU updates and installation as well as the security and governance features in Azure for on-premises systems, according to Microsoft.

Remember that on January 10, 2023, support for Windows Server 2008/R2 Extended Security Updates (ESUs) will also stop.
